PM Modi wins online reader’s poll for TIME Person of the Year

TIME’S Person of the Year will be revealed on December 7.

Narendra Modi, Indian Prime Minister has got the online reader’s poll for TIME “2016 Person of the Year”, beating out other world politicians, leaders and artists as the most influential person in 2016 among people who polled. The magazine’s editors choose the final Person of the Year, but poll results prepare a look at how the globe sees these figures.

The poll closed on Sunday at midnight and Modi won with 18% of the vote. He placed well ahead among his closest contenders, including Julian Assange, Barack Obama and Donald Trump who all received 7% of the “yes” vote. Narendra Modi also was far ahead of other prominent individuals of this year, like Hillary Clinton (4%) and Mark Zuckerberg (2%).

In recent months, PM Modi saw high approval grades from Indians, depending on a September Pew poll, and ratified Paris Climate Change Agreement. Narendra Modi has come under perusal recently for getting rid of 1000- and 500-rupee notes, threatening India’s economy and impacting cash-based businesses.

Analyzed by poll host Apester, current poll results, found that preferences differ across the globe and the United States. Narendra Modi performed very well among Indian voters as well as those in New Jersey and California.

Every year, TIME picks the most influential person of the year who have had the largest global impact for the past 12 months. In partnership with IBM’s Watson and Opentopic this year, TIME editors were also capable of seeing how contenders were influential on the Internet.

TIME’S Person of the Year will be revealed on December 7.
