We all think that Sun is the most massive thing in the universe, but these discoveries will make you think that it is just the size of a playing ball in comparison.
It is the closest Giant star to Sun and is an orange hued giant star in the GEMINI constellation. According to NASA it is larger than the sun with about two times its mass and the size of Pollux is nine times more. It is 35 light years away from earth. Furthermore the luminous intensity of Pollux is 32 times that of sun. In addition to this Pollux hydrogen and helium are present in abundance.
Arcturus is an orange giant star of the constellation Boötes. The star got its name from a Greek word Arktouros meaning “Guardian of the Bear”. The radius of Arcturus is around 11 million miles which is around 26 times the size of sun and because of this size its luminosity is between 100 to 200 times more. Its surface temperature is around 4000 Celsius which is 73% of the sun. The mass of Arcturus is 1.1 times more than the sun. The Arcturus star is 37 light years away from earth.
Rigel also known as the BETA ORIONS is the brightest star in the constellation Orion with estimates at 78 times the Sun’s radius. It is 120,000 to 279,000 times as luminous and is twice hot as compare to the Sun. The mass of Rigel is almost 18 times that of Sun. The Rigel star is around 800 light years from earth. Rigel is 8 million years older star and has already exhausted the supply of oxygen to the core. The Rigel is eventually expanding and if it explodes as a supernova it will become the brightest object in the night sky apart from moon.
Betelgeuse or alpha Orionis is the second brightest star of the constellation ORION. It is red supergiant star. The Betelgeuse is 1000 times bigger than our own sun and if it is replace by our sun then it would extend to the orbit of Jupiter. Because Betelgeuse is a irregular variable it also fluctuates in brightness and it has a luminous intensity of around 100,00 times that of sun. Betelgeuse is not as hot as the sun and is only 60% hot as compared to sun with temperatures around 3200C. In addition, Betelgeuse is having maximum mass of around 20 to 30 times that of the sun. It is 642 light years away from the earth.
It is a extreme red supergiant star in the Cassiopeiae constellation with around 1260 times the Sun’s radius and it is 240,000 to 270,000 times more luminous. The mass of PZ Cassiopeiae is 25 times that of our Sun. PZ Cassiopeiae distance from Earth was initially estimated to be around 7800 light years but after using the water masers the distance had been refined to approximately 9160 light years away from our earth.
5.VY Canis Majoris
It is a red hypergiant star located in the Canis Major constellation. It is the largest known star our galaxy i.e. Milky Way. It’s size is nearly 1500 times and is 250,000 to 500,000 times as luminous as the sun, in fact VY Canis Majoris is so bright that it is consuming itself as the star burns brighter and brighter it consumes its own mass to continue spreading light. Calculations estimated that the mass of VY Canis Majoris is 10 to 25 times that of our sun and having surface temperatures of around 3200C. It is 4000-5000 light years from earth. VY Canis Majoris is on its “deathbed” and is expected to explode as a supernova in the next 100,000 years. After the explosion the collapse of its remaining core could be massive enough to create a black hole.
Westerlund 1-26 is a hypergiant of the constellation Ara and is present in the “Zone Of Avoidance” in the sky. It is one of the largest star ever but till today its exact radius is yet unknown. It is 1530 times bigger than the Sun. The Wd 1-26 is a well known strong radio source. Opposite to other stars, Westerlund 1-26 not seems like to change its luminosity and its luminosity is almost 380,000 times brighter. The mass of Westerlund 1-26 is still undefine. It is a very cool hypergaint with surface temperature of about 3000C. The distance between our earth and this hypergiant is around 16000 light years.
RW Cephei is an orange hypergiant in the constellation Cepheus. It is almost 1535 times bigger also RW Cephei is one of the most luminous hypergaints and its luminosity is more than 500,000 times brighter than our Sun and hence the star is still expanding. Consequently the mass of RW Cephei is 40 times more. In addition the surface temperature of RW Cephei is very hot and is 4120C. It is 11,500 light years away from our earth.
WOH G64 is a star in southern constellation of Dorado. It got its name from its three discoverers Westerlund, Olander and Hedin. It is 1540 times as much as bigger than the sun as well as the luminosity of WOH G64 is 280,000 times more. The mass of WOH G64 is previously estimated almost 40 times the sun’s mass as the star is surrounded with clouds of dust and gases but finally the calculations described that star began its life with mass of almost 25 solar mass but decreased gradually to 20 times the sun’s mass. The surface temperature at WOH G64 is 3130C. WOH G64 is nearly 163,000 light years away from earth and for our information 1 light year is equal to 9,460,528,400,000 kilometers. So you can think that the distance between our very own earth and WOH G64 is beyond imagination
UY Scuti is a bright red supergiant in the constellation Scutum and is currently the largest star in the universe. The star seems like to have more than 1700 times of our own Sun and UY Scuti is not only the most massive star till date but it is also the most luminous stars of its kind. Assuming to have luminosity more than 340,000 times the sun. Rather having this gigantic size the mass of UY Scuti is almost 30 times the sun as the mass and size are not always same in reference to giant stars. The volume of UY Scuti is almost 21 billion times the Sun. UY Scuti has a surface temperature of 3700C while the star is 9500 light years away from earth.
In addition to this if we consider our earth as a playing marble, the sun would have a diameter of 20cm (8inches) Beach Ball and the UY Scuti will have a diameter of 3454 meters, over 4 times the height of Burj Khalifa (U.A.E) which is currently the tallest building in the world
Therefore the word ‘’gigantic’’ in our brain needs to get redefine.
